Getting that machine onto the network took hours. Getting it to say anything useful took weeks.
Bridging a serial port is a known kind of work. What comes after it is not. The machine is online, the packets are flowing, and the plant still cannot read what any of it means - the cycle times, the fault codes, the utilization are all in there, encoded in a dialect defined by a vendor decades ago and documented almost nowhere.
Connectivity gets a machine online. Interpretation makes it legible. Both are infrastructure - and a plant can be fully wired and still completely dark.
